Understanding Microsoft's Security Update
A guide to the mandatory security changes for Microsoft 365 and how they affect your business services.
What is Happening?
To better protect organizations from cyber threats, Microsoft is enforcing a higher security standard called Security Defaults across all Microsoft 365 tenants. The most significant part of this update is the requirement for Multifactor Authentication (MFA) on all sign-ins.
This policy now extends to "non-interactive" sign-ins—automated logins used by applications and devices, such as your multifunction printer's "scan to email" feature.
Who is Affected?
Any organization using Microsoft 365 services. The notification emails are sent to Global Administrators.
The Deadline
This change will be automatically enforced for your organization by July 4, 2025.
The Impact
Any device or application using an old, insecure sign-in method (like just a username/password) will be blocked and stop working.
What You Need To Do
The primary service affected for most businesses is scan-to-email on multifunction printers that use a Microsoft 365 account. You must reconfigure these devices to use a modern, secure method before the deadline. We have prepared two guides to help you.
Our Recommended Solution
The most secure and reliable method is to bypass email entirely and scan directly to a secure network folder. This method is not affected by Microsoft's email security changes and is easier to manage long-term.

If you must continue using scan-to-email, you can no longer use a Microsoft 365 account directly. A reliable alternative is to set up a free Gmail account, enable its security features, and configure your scanner to use it instead.
